From My Daily Reading #8:  Set My Heart on Fire Lord!

Jonathan McGary

Luke 24:14-35

I often hear, and admit I have thought and even sometimes think, that it must have been so different to live in Bible times.  When one would be visited by angels, follow a pillar of fire, or actually hear God or Jesus speaking to them in an audible voice.

To have visions or see miracles!

What an advantage they must have had!

Yet, as we read the Word of God, we find that both Old Testament Patriarchs as well as the disciples and early church often miss understood what God was saying, or didn’t comprehend what Jesus was telling them.

Often times their eyes were blinded to what was happening right before them.

Whether it was the dullness of their ears, their own agenda and preconceived conceptions or whether God somehow shielded their eyes from the obvious truth that was right before them.

The followers of Christ missed altogether the many times that Jesus had told them he was going to suffer and die.  They also missed the instructions he had given them about what to do and where to go when he would be crucified and buried.

He even told them not to be afraid, to be of good cheer, and that His going away was a blessing, so that when He was gone he could send the comforter to them, to be with them always.

When you stop to really think about it, we today have it so much better than those early saints of God of Bible times.

We have the big picture, we get to read not just of a few miracles that we might have been present for, but all the miracles that were done by God, prophets, disciples, as well as Jesus himself that have been recorded.

We are able to see the the Mystery of the Old Testament revealed in the New Testament, and see the New Testament in the Old Testament concealed.

We have the Holy Spirit to live within is and help us to interpret the Bible and God’s will for us, which up to the point of this passage, the disciples and Old Testament believers did not have.

But still we might find a moment of complaint, and think I could be a better Christian if I had Jesus walking beside me and explaining to me the scriptures.  If we had that then we too might have hearts that burn with passion for Jesus, as these two disciples did after their conversation with Jesus on the road to Emmaus.

When that happens I pray that you remember as I have today…

That God is speaking to us when we read His Holy Word.  It is the voice of God speaking in our ears and to our hearts.

I hope we remember as I have today that we to can talk with God as we walk along our way.  All we have to do is pray.

I hope you remember that God speaks to us, listens to us, and goes with us; strengthening us for the journey and equipping us for the task to which He calls us.

And as we read, and pray, and remember, I pray that our hearts too burn with a passion for Him!  Just as these two did, as they realized the blessing they had just encountered!

Set our hearts on fire Lord…Set our hearts on fire!
