Numbers 12:3 “Now the man Moses was very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.”
Did you catch that?
Moses was the most humble man on the face of the earth!!
When I think of Moses, I think of Charleston Heston (look him up kids) portraying Moses in the movie, “The Ten Commandments” from 1956.
The movie was obviously before my time, but I remember watching Heston, standing there with the long beard and chiseled features, leading the Hebrew nation as they exited out of the land of Egypt and across the Red Sea on dry Ground.
That is the image of Moses I have burned into my mind. Strong, bold, a leader, a warrior, mighty.
Humble is not the word that comes to my mind.
But there it is, in black and white, in the inspired word of God. He was the most humble man on earth!!
In the context of this statement, we see that he is under constant critique by the people of Israel. Nothing is ever good enough. People are always complaining despite his leadership, and the miracles that have been done by God in delivering them from slavery and oppression.
To make matters worse, now, in this chapter, his brother (and partner in leadership) and sister turn against him.
But notice what Moses did in response to the accusations of Miriam and Aaron.
(And here is the lesson for us.)
He let God handle it. He let God speak to the situation. He let God deal with the issue.
Humility is an attribute that we should adopt and practice. Here we see Moses humility described. Throughout the Bible we see Humility, and meekness (which go hand in hand) advocated, encouraged, and exemplified.
In the world today nearly everyone wants to boast, brag, and fight for their rights, their honor, and to defend their name. In the world today we are quick to blow up at others over feelings of being slighted, dismissed, offended, or being disrespected.
Perhaps it would be advisable to show our difference as Christ followers in keeping silent and demonstrating an attitude of humility.
Perhaps we should allow God to take up our case and trust Him to handle it rather than blowing our testimony by blowing our minds.
After all it was Jesus Christ who humbled Himself in stepping away from His throne in heaven and born as a baby in a manger, lived a difficult life, and laid down his rights as God and king, to bear our burden of sin on the cross…
…So that we might have the right to call God our Father, have the right to turn to the God of the universe in prayer, and one day have a home in Heaven.
So...Did you Notice? What Did you Notice? Perhaps we should notice and put into practice this Mosaic, Christlike characteristic of humility, because it is the right and Godly thing to do, and allow God to use our humble response to cause a world in desperate need, to take notice.
