That’s A Wrap: Learning to Be a Godly Friend

Updated: Feb 3, 2023

Job 2:11-13

  1. Be Willing to Be There- Job’s three friends traveled from great distance and spent a great deal of time with Job. The best thing we can do for someone in need, is just be there.

  2. Feel Their Pain - Job’s friends demonstrated their empathy, by mourning with him, and sitting in a pile of ashes with their friend.

  3. Determine To Listen - Job’s three friends, sat silent with job for seven days, and then listened to him as he gave his complaint. Don’t just listen so that you can then give your two cents…learn to listen so that they can be heard.

  4. Be an Iron Sharpener - Be a listener, but also be willing to stand on truth and don’t just tell people what they want to hear to make them feel better. Follow the Holy Spirit’s lead and timing, but be willing to be honest with people. If we are not willing to be honest it shows we don’t really care.

  5. Be Prepared to Apologize - Sometimes we get things wrong or don’t know the whole story. Job’s friends were right in some areas but misjudged Job. God instructed them to be contrite and repent, and they did so.

  6. Freely Forgive - Sometimes, like Job, we are the ones that are wronged by others. Job, however, was willing to forgive his three friends when they came to him for forgiveness. Be slow to get angry, and quick to forgive. Forgive others as God has forgiven you. In other words even when someone does not deserve it.
